Bottom Line Up Front (BLUF): How GPA is Calculated

Grade Point Average (GPA) is computed by multiplying each course's numerical grade point value by its credit hours to calculate total Quality Points, then dividing by total credit hours: GPA = Total Quality Points / Total Credits. Weighted GPAs add bonus points (+0.5 for Honors, +1.0 for AP/IB courses).

Step-by-Step Grade Point Average Methodology

1. Grade Points to Numerical Value Conversion

Standard letter grades map to numerical scale values: A+ = 4.0 (or 4.33), A = 4.0, A- = 3.7, B+ = 3.3, B = 3.0, B- = 2.7, C+ = 2.3, C = 2.0, C- = 1.7, D+ = 1.3, D = 1.0, F = 0.0.

2. Weighted vs. Unweighted High School GPA

Unweighted GPA caps all courses at 4.0 regardless of difficulty. Weighted GPA rewards advanced coursework by adding +0.50 points for Honors courses (A = 4.5) and +1.00 points for Advanced Placement (AP) or International Baccalaureate (IB) courses (A = 5.0).

3. Cumulative GPA Target Planning Formula

Required GPA = ((Target Cumulative GPA × Total Future Credits) - (Current GPA × Current Credits)) / Upcoming Semester Credits.

Frequently Asked Questions about GPA Calculation

What is the difference between semester GPA and cumulative GPA?

Semester GPA is calculated strictly for courses completed in a single term, whereas cumulative GPA is the weighted average across all completed semesters throughout your entire academic career.

How do 0-credit or pass/fail (P/NP) courses affect GPA?

Pass/Fail or non-credit courses do not carry quality points and are excluded from GPA calculations. They count towards completed degree credits without affecting grade point averages.

What is considered a good GPA for college admissions and jobs?

A 3.5 to 4.0 GPA is generally considered excellent for top university admissions and competitive jobs. A 3.0 or higher is standard for good academic standing and many graduate school applications.
