Comprendre l'Indice de Masse Corporelle (IMC)

En résumé : Le calculateur MakerHub calcule instantanément votre Indice de Masse Corporelle (IMC), votre classification OMS et votre poids idéal.

Body Mass Index (BMI), originally formulated by Belgian mathematician Adolphe Quetelet in 1832, is an international screening metric endorsed by the World Health Organization (WHO) and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) to classify tissue mass and assess cardiometabolic risk across adult populations.

WHO Adult BMI & BMI Prime Classification Reference Table

The World Health Organization (WHO) establishes the following standard adult body mass index brackets, BMI Prime ratios, and associated health risk correlations:

Classification CategoryStandard BMI (kg/m²)Asian Population CutoffBMI Prime RatioCardiometabolic Risk
Severe Underweight< 16.0< 16.0< 0.64High risk of nutritional deficiency & immune fatigue
Mild to Moderate Underweight16.0 – 18.416.0 – 18.40.64 – 0.73Elevated risk of osteoporosis & muscle wasting
Normal / Healthy Weight18.5 – 24.918.5 – 22.90.74 – 0.99Lowest statistical all-cause mortality risk
Overweight (Pre-Obesity)25.0 – 29.923.0 – 27.41.00 – 1.19Moderate cardiovascular & blood pressure risk
Obesity Class I (Moderate)30.0 – 34.9≥ 27.51.20 – 1.39High risk of Type 2 diabetes & lipid disorders
Obesity Class II & III≥ 35.0≥ 35.0≥ 1.40Severe cardiovascular, metabolic & joint strain risk

Formule de calcul de l'IMC

L'IMC est égal au poids en kilogrammes divisé par la taille en mètres au carré : IMC = kg / m².

Metric Units (International Standard)
BMI = Weight (kg) / [Height (m)]²

Example: An adult weighing 70 kg with a height of 1.75 m: 70 / (1.75 × 1.75) = 22.86 kg/m² (Normal Weight).

Imperial Units (US Standard)
BMI = 703 × Weight (lbs) / [Height (in)]²

Example: An adult weighing 154 lbs with a height of 69 in (5'9"): (703 × 154) / (69 × 69) = 22.74 kg/m² (Normal Weight).

The Oxford New BMI Formula vs Classical Quetelet Index

Professor Nick Trefethen of Oxford University introduced the New BMI Formula to account for 3D geometric body volume scaling, which prevents tall individuals from being erroneously categorized as overweight and short individuals from underestimating body fat:

\text{BMI}_{\text{Oxford}} = 1.3 \times \frac{\text{Weight (kg)}}{[\text{Height (m)}]^{2.5}}

Limites de l'IMC

L'IMC ne fait pas la différence entre masse musculaire et masse graisseuse.
