Classificazione IMC secondo l'OMS
Valori ufficiali dell'Organizzazione Mondiale della Sanità.
| Classificazione | Fascia IMC (kg/m²) | Rischio di Salute |
|---|---|---|
| Severe Thinness | < 16.0 | Very High Risk of Nutritional Deficiency |
| Moderate Thinness | 16.0 – 16.9 | Moderate Health Risk |
| Mild Thinness / Underweight | 17.0 – 18.4 | Mild Risk of Underweight Complications |
| Normal / Healthy Weight | 18.5 – 24.9 | Lowest Risk of Weight-Related Conditions |
| Overweight / Pre-Obese | 25.0 – 29.9 | Increased Risk of Cardiovascular Disease |
| Obesity Class I (Moderate) | 30.0 – 34.9 | High Risk of Hypertension & Diabetes |
| Obesity Class II (Severe) | 35.0 – 39.9 | Very High Health Risk |
| Obesity Class III (Very Severe) | ≥ 40.0 | Extremely High Risk of Serious Complications |
Comprendere l'Indice di Massa Corporea (IMC)
In breve: Il calcolatore MakerHub stima con precisione l'IMC, il peso ideale e i parametri ponderali secondo le linee guida OMS.
Body Mass Index (BMI), originally formulated by Belgian mathematician Adolphe Quetelet in 1832, is an international screening metric endorsed by the World Health Organization (WHO) and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) to classify tissue mass and assess cardiometabolic risk across adult populations.
WHO Adult BMI & BMI Prime Classification Reference Table
The World Health Organization (WHO) establishes the following standard adult body mass index brackets, BMI Prime ratios, and associated health risk correlations:
| Classification Category | Standard BMI (kg/m²) | Asian Population Cutoff | BMI Prime Ratio | Cardiometabolic Risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Severe Underweight | < 16.0 | < 16.0 | < 0.64 | High risk of nutritional deficiency & immune fatigue |
| Mild to Moderate Underweight | 16.0 – 18.4 | 16.0 – 18.4 | 0.64 – 0.73 | Elevated risk of osteoporosis & muscle wasting |
| Normal / Healthy Weight | 18.5 – 24.9 | 18.5 – 22.9 | 0.74 – 0.99 | Lowest statistical all-cause mortality risk |
| Overweight (Pre-Obesity) | 25.0 – 29.9 | 23.0 – 27.4 | 1.00 – 1.19 | Moderate cardiovascular & blood pressure risk |
| Obesity Class I (Moderate) | 30.0 – 34.9 | ≥ 27.5 | 1.20 – 1.39 | High risk of Type 2 diabetes & lipid disorders |
| Obesity Class II & III | ≥ 35.0 | ≥ 35.0 | ≥ 1.40 | Severe cardiovascular, metabolic & joint strain risk |
Formula dell'IMC
IMC = peso in kg / (altezza in metri)².
Example: An adult weighing 70 kg with a height of 1.75 m: 70 / (1.75 × 1.75) = 22.86 kg/m² (Normal Weight).
Example: An adult weighing 154 lbs with a height of 69 in (5'9"): (703 × 154) / (69 × 69) = 22.74 kg/m² (Normal Weight).
The Oxford New BMI Formula vs Classical Quetelet Index
Professor Nick Trefethen of Oxford University introduced the New BMI Formula to account for 3D geometric body volume scaling, which prevents tall individuals from being erroneously categorized as overweight and short individuals from underestimating body fat:
Limiti dell'IMC
L'IMC non distingue tra massa magra e massa grassa.
